Laborers Recruit Apprentices

ASTORIA, NY (02/25/2008)(readMedia)-- The Joint Apprenticeship Committee for the Laborers Union, Local 731, will open recruitment on March 11, 2008 for 45 skilled construction craft laborer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications will be available at the local, 3411 35th Avenue, Astoria, from 8 a.m. to noon, March 11 only. Applications must be completed on the premises.

The committee requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school or general equivalency diploma.
  • Have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and apprentice school.
  • Pass a written examination.
  • Provide a notarized affidavit attesting to their physical ability to do the work, which includes: being able to lift materials weighing up to 94 pounds, carry for 25 feet, and stack to a height of 54 inches; shovel ½ cubic yard of material into a wheelbarrow, wheel for 30 feet and deposit into a container; work at heights of 10 feet or greater and in confined spaces.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
