Greening of City’s Taxis Fleet Will Help Clear the Air
NEW YORK, NY (10/31/2008; 1532)(readMedia)-- The American Lung Association of New York is disappointed with today's ruling against the TLC's plan to require all new taxicabs to have a minimum 25 mile-per-gallon ("mpg") city rating by October 1, 2008, and a minimum 30 mpg city rating by October 1, 2009. The court's decision is a setback for clean air across New York City.
Increased mpg standards, combined with the use of the newest clean technologies will have a positive lasting impact on the air we all breathe. It is undisputed that vehicle emissions exacerbate conditions for individuals with lung disease. Hybrid vehicles are a clear improvement over the current fleet of taxis which are driving New York's streets and contributing to New York's dirty air.
The outdoor air quality in the five boroughs is toxic, and today's decision provides an unfortunate road block toward helping New Yorkers breathe easier.
