ROCHESTER, NY (10/24/2007; 1621)(readMedia)-- Douglas Warney And Jeffrey Deskovic, who were each exonerated after spending years in prison for murders they did not commit, join New Yorkers Against the Death Penalty Director David Kaczynski at Lakefront Ramada Inn in Geneva.

Douglas Warney, who served nine years in prison for a murder he did not commit, and Jeffrey Deskovic, who spent 16 years in prison for a murder he did not commit, join New Yorkers Against the Death Penalty Executive Director David Kaczynski in a talk at the Lakefront Ramada in Geneva at 2 pm on Thursday, October 25.

Their appearance comes two days day after New York’s Court of Appeals overturned the last death sentence standing in the state, upholding its 2004 decision declaring the state’s 1995 capital punishment law unconstitutional. And it comes a week after The Innocence Project released a report on wrongful convictions showing New York is the worst in the nation when it comes to convicting innocent people of murders they did not commit. Seven New York inmates have been freed upon DNA-based post-conviction investigation this decade, more than in Texas or anywhere else in the country. Deskovic and Warney are among the seven. Warney was originally charged with a capital offense and could have been sentenced to death.
