Statement from Chairman Joseph N. Mondello
ALBANY, NY (10/06/2008; 1554)(readMedia)-- As the financial markets continue to search for a bottom, much has been made about which Presidential candidate has the rock ribbed determination, vision and experience to deal with the crisis at hand. In truth, whoever is going to be handed this mess in November, it will all be about personal integrity, resolve and enormous strength.
Care to hazard a guess who has that area covered? John McCain.
For some who have known little more than a Bull market, these are shocking times. For others, who have gone through multiple recessionary cycles, this isn't pretty, but nor is it the end of the world. This is a nation that has historically withstood repeated shocks and gotten up off the floor to come back. As a nation, and a state, we are about to collectively grit our teeth and get through this by taking some tough economic medicine.
To anyone willing to read the record, it is clear that John McCain is the only one capable of making the tough decisions that are going to be required, free of ties to special interests, free of big ticket liberal spending, and personally disciplined to restore confidence in the markets.
During good times Republicans in this state have had a long standing ideological commitment to cutting the cost of government. During bad times we have a moral commitment to do even more. Find the waste. Root it out. Block tax increases wherever and whenever we can. Confront every item in a budget and ask, "Is this necessary?"
In short, we have long practiced McCain's sustained policy of fiscal prudence with public money.
No one knows better than New York Republicans that we represent the working families who put their salaries into savings, looking to put their children through college with something left over for retirement. They value home ownership, hard work and thrift. They don't ask for a handout but they don't want to be ripped off either. Now, with times being tough, this is the political party that will stand tall with its constituents and insist on accountability, reform, and resolve under fire.
That's why our New York State Senate Republican delegation and U.S. Senator John McCain are proud and determined leaders.
