National Guard Aviators Conduct Long Island Fire Response Training

RONKONKOMA, NY (07/24/2008; 1247)(readMedia)-- Aviators of the 3rd Battalion, 142nd Aviation and local community authorities will participate in a joint training exercise to ensure readiness and response to fire-fighting capabilities should they be required in N.Y. State.

The training will utilize a 660-gallon Bambi-bucket. The training also provides National Guard aircrews that have not qualified in to be current in their abilities. This training will be conducted at Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.

The purpose of this training is to recertify or qualify all pilots and crewmembers at Army Aviation Support Facility #1 in the operation of the available firefighting equipment for the current fire season on Long Island and throughout the New York metropolitan area.

What: Bambi water-bucket delivery training and re-certification.

Who: Joint training between the New York Army National Guard aviation unit in Ronkonkoma and Suffolk County Parks Department, Suffolk County Police Department, Lakeland Fire Department, Town of Islip

When: Friday, July 25, 2008 starting at 9 a.m. and lasting approximately 3 hours.

Where: Suffolk County's Lake Ronkonkoma Park located at the north end of Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y. 11779. Linkup with aircrews will be adjacent to the park visitor center.

Coverage Opportunities:

0900-0945: A UH-60 Blackhawk will land at Lake Ronkonkoma Park for a safety briefing. This time will be available to the media for photos/video and interviews. Pilots and aircrews will be on the ground during and after this time awaiting their rotation for Bambi bucket training.
