Inducted into New Jersey State Boxing Hall of Fame
ALBANY, NY (11/08/2007; 1049)(readMedia)-- New York State Athletic Commissioner Melvina Lathan will be inducted into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame on Thursday, November 8th in recognition of her long career as a professional boxing judge.
Commissioner Lathan is Governor Spitzer's nominee to the State Athletic Commission. She was confirmed by the State Senate in April 2007, making her the first African American female State Athletic Commissioner.
Over a span of 17 years, Commissioner Lathan judged eight-three (83) world championship bouts in the United States and abroad. “I am very honored to be inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame,” Lathan said. “Not only is this a personal honor, it’s also a statement about the importance of fair and accurate scoring, which is so essential to the integrity of the sport.”
As well as being a judge, Lathan also served as a member of several international sanctioning bodies, including the International Boxing Federation (“IBF”), World Boxing Organization (“WBO”), International Boxing Organization (“IBO”) and World Boxing Council (“WBC”). She has also been active in amateur boxing. In 2001, she was awarded the Rocky Marciano Official’s Award by the American Association for the Improvement of Boxing.
Ron Scott Stevens, Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission, congratulated Lathan on her induction. “Commissioner Lathan brings a spirit of professionalism to the sport of boxing that is much admired. Her recognition is very well deserved,” he said.
Along with Lathan, a dozen other world class boxing professionals were inducted into the Hall of Fame. They include former world champions Charles Murray and Alfred Cole, as well as pioneering female promoter Diane Lee Fischer.
The induction ceremony will take place at a ceremonial dinner at the Venetian, 546 River Drive, Garfield, New Jersey.
