DES MOINES, IA (08/07/2008; 1251)(readMedia)-- The Iowa State Fair started off with a bang this morning, or rather a record-setting chomp. The Corndog Chomp, part of this year's opening ceremonies set a record for the most people simultaneously eating corndogs. More than 10,000 people packed the Grandstand for the event.
For the first time in history, the Fair offered free admission at the gate from 5-8:30 a.m. and a free corndog at opening ceremonies. More than 42,000 people came through the gate before 8:30 a.m.
"The turnout certainly exceeded our expectations. With so many people willing to get out bright and early, it's clear Iowans are eager to enjoy every minute of their Fair," said Fair Manager/CEO Gary Slater.
Opening day celebrations will continue with contests, games, food and entertainment including performances from the Farmall Promenade Dancing Tractors, CMA Award-winner Lady Antebellum and Christian music icon Michael W. Smith just to name a few.
The 2008 Iowa State Fair runs August 7-17 - "U Gotta Love It." The Fairgrounds are located at East 30th Street and East University Avenue, just 10 minutes east of downtown Des Moines and are open 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. each day of the Fair. Exhibit hours vary.
