Operating Engineers Recruit Apprentices

FARMINGDALE, NY (03/28/2008; 1102)(readMedia)-- The International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 138, will conduct recruitment from April 1 through September 30, 2008 for 10 operating engineer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the local, 575 Horseblock Road, Brookhaven, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., except legal holidays.

The union requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school or general equivalency diploma.
  • Live in Nassau or Suffolk County.
  • Be legally able to work in the United States.
  • Have reliable transportation to and from job sites and apprentice school.
  • Be physically able to do the work.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
