Operating Engineers Recruit Apprentices

GLENMONT, NY (05/08/2008; 1440)(readMedia)-- The Operating Engineers Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, Local 106, will conduct recruitment from May 14, 2008 through April 15, 2009 for five operating engineer (universal equipment) apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today. Applications will be accepted for five openings from Local 106’s jurisdiction.

Applications can be obtained at the local, 44 Hannay Lane, Glenmont, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., the second Wednesday of each month, except when Wednesday is a holiday.

The committee requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school or equivalency diploma -- transcript or certificate required after acceptance for the program.
  • Must have lived for 6 months prior to recruitment in Albany, Broome, Chenango, Clinton, Columbia, the northern part of Dutchess, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Greene, Hamilton, parts of Herkimer, Montgomery, Otsego, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Tioga, Warren and Washington counties.
  • Be a United States citizen or legally entitled to work in the U.S.
  • Take an aptitude test.
  • Have a driver's license -- apprentices will be required to drive company vehicles.
  • Have a valid means of transportation to work and apprentice school.
  • Sign an affidavit stating they are physically able to do the work.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
