Operating Engineers Recruit Apprentices

LAKE VIEW, NY (10/26/2007; 1203)(readMedia)-- The Operating Engineers Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, Local 17, will conduct recruitment on October 31 and November 28 for one surveyor assistant, instrument apprentice, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today. Five applications will be accepted for one opening.

Applications can be obtained at the local, 2342 Pleasant Ave., Lake View, from 9 a.m. to noon on the last Wednesday of these months only.

The committee requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school or equivalency diploma -- transcript or certificate required after acceptance for the program.
  • Live in Erie County or Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Orleans, Wyoming or the western part of Genesee County.
  • Be a United States citizen or legally entitled to work in the U.S.
  • Have a driver's license -- apprentices will be required to drive company vehicles.
  • Have a valid means of transportation to work and apprentice school.
  • Must pass drug test given at time of indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
