Peter Ducey to Chair Biological Sciences Department at SUNY Cortland

CORTLAND, NY (08/25/2008; 1531)(readMedia)-- SUNY Cortland has appointed Peter Ducey of Cortland, N.Y., as chair of the Biological Sciences Department in the School of Arts and Sciences.

Ducey, a professor of biological sciences who has served the College for 18 years, began his three-year appointment on Aug. 1.

The Biological Sciences Department is designed to ensure that majors obtain a strong, comprehensive foundation in the areas of biology and related sciences. The program offers specialized study in many areas, with more than 30 courses in diverse areas of biology. Biology majors can become certified to teach in grades seven through 12, prepare to pursue health-related careers or concentrate in environmental science. The department offers a B.A. and B.S. in biology, a B.S. in biomedical sciences, a B.A. and B.S. in conservation biology and a B.S. in adolescence education: biology. Also offered is a concentration in environmental science and a minor in biology.

Ducey, who joined the College's Biological Sciences Department in 1990, was promoted to associate professor in 1994 and to professor in 1998. In addition to teaching, he directors the Bowers Science Museum located in Bowers Hall.

A native of Brooklyn and Levittown, N.Y., Ducey earned his bachelor's degree from Adelphi University in Garden City, N.J., and his master of science and doctorate degrees from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
