Plasterers Recruit Apprentices

NORTH TONAWANDA, NY (04/22/2008; 1003)(readMedia)-- The Plasterers Joint Apprenticeship Committee, Local 9, will conduct recruitment from April 23 through October 23, 2008 for 5 apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications will be available at the local, 286 Oliver Street, North Tonawanda, Wednesdays, from noon to 2 p.m.

The committee requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have at least a ninth grade education.
  • Have reliable transportation to and from job sites and apprentice classes.
  • Take an aptitude test.
  • Be interviewed by the committee.
  • Take and pass a drug test, paid for by the sponsor, upon acceptance into the program.
  • Sign an affidavit attesting to their physical ability to do the work, which includes lifting up to 70 pounds and working at heights above 25 feet.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
