NEW YORK, NY (10/17/2007; 1402)(readMedia)-- Khaleef Ahmad Reed, 27, didn’t want to burden his girlfriend with car payments while he served federal prison time. So, before reporting to prison, he falsely reported his car stolen to collect a $9,300 insurance settlement to pay off his car loan.
Now, Reed, arrested upon his release from the federal prison after serving his term, faces two to four years in state prison after pleading guilty on Oct. 4 to grand larceny. Reed, of 730 Cedarwood Terrace, will be sentenced Jan. 3 in Monroe County Court.
The New York State Insurance Department reported that Reed hid the car inside a relative’s garage before telling police it had been stolen while parked on a Rochester street. Reed then filed an insurance claim and turned over the only key to the car to his insurance company before being sent to the federal prison in Allenwood, Pa. on an unrelated firearms conviction.
Gary Sullivan, an investigator with the Insurance Department’s Frauds Bureau, said the scheme unraveled when the relative purchased a new car and wanted to use the garage. The relative, unaware of the stolen car report, asked police to remove Reed’s car after Reed’s girlfriend, Shaunte Carley, 30, was unable to do so. Police linked Reed’s car to the stolen car report after investigating the relative’s request.
Reed is now being held without bail in Monroe County Jail.
Carley, also of 730 Cedarwood Terrace, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor petty larceny in August and is awaiting sentencing.
The case is being prosecuted by Monroe County Assistant District Attorney Casey Spencer.
