WAVERLY, IA (07/31/2008; 1000)(readMedia)-- The Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation and Cookies Food Products are honored to name Roger White as an Iowan of the Day for the 2008 Iowa State Fair.
Roger has spent a significant portion of his life molding young men into quality citizens and leaders. As the leader of the Polk Hustlers 4-H Club for 25 years, he made a memorable impact on the vast number of youths that came under his supervision. He has been described as a strong, dedicated, confident, and reassuring leader; qualities that he passed on to the young ones he guided. Doug Johnson, now a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force, said of Roger, "He invested in America's future by spending his time and energy on the children around him. His fingerprints are on countless adults. Many of the leadership techniques I employ in my profession were first demonstrated to me by Roger." That sort of care and dedication led to a 2005 induction into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame. Roger was also involved in the Northeast Iowa Angus Association for 30 years, spending most of those years as advisor to the Junior Association.
Roger's day of honor at the Iowa State Fair will be Saturday, August 9. Roger will receive a night's stay at the Des Moines Downtown Marriott, VIP Parking at the Fair, special use of the Iowan of the Day golf cart, $200 in cash, tickets to the Rick Springfield concert at the Grandstand, and subscriptions to Iowan and Iowa Gardening magazines. Roger will also be part of a special presentation on the Anne & Bill Riley Stage at 2:15 p.m. on August 9.
The Blue Ribbon Foundation began the Iowan of the Day award in 1997 to honor those Iowans who've truly made a difference for those around them. The Foundation reviews over 250 nominations each year, and selects those that show examples of integrity, decency, hard work, and dedication to community improvement.
The Blue Ribbon Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. Since its inception in 1993, the Foundation has generated over $65 million for renovations and improvements to the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
