Roofers Recruit Apprentices

WEST SENECA, NY (03/28/2008; 1123)(readMedia)-- The Roofers Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee of Western New York, Local 74, will conduct recruitment from April 1, 2008 through March 31, 2009 for 25 apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications will be available in person only at the local, 2800 Clinton St., West Seneca, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The committee requires that applicants:

• Be at least 18 years old.
• Have a high school or equivalency diploma.
• Have a New York State driver's license -- apprentices will be required to drive company vehicles.
• Have reliable private transportation to and from work sites and instruction facilities.
• Sign an affidavit stating they are physically able to do the work and pass a drug test.

Upon hiring, applicants must present their driver’s license and diploma or certificate and pay a $10 non-refundable processing fee.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
