Roofers Recruit Apprentices

BROOKLYN, NY (04/15/2008; 1115)(readMedia)-- The Joint Apprenticeship Committee for the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers, and Allied Workers, Local 8, will conduct recruitment on April 18 for six apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications can be obtained in person only at the local, 467 Dean St., Brooklyn, from 8 a.m. to noon. Completed applications must be returned postmarked no later than May 2.

The committee requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have at least a tenth grade education -- proof required; a high school diploma or GED is recommended.
  • Live within the local's jurisdiction -- the five boroughs of New York City; Westchester, Rockland, Sullivan, Dutchess, Ulster, Orange, and Putnam Counties; and Hudson County, New Jersey.
  • Have a valid driver’s license.
  • Sign a trade specific affidavit attesting to their physical ability to do the work.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
