Roofers Recruit Apprentices

ALBANY, NY (04/16/2008; 1526)(readMedia)-- The Roofers Joint Apprenticeship Committee of the Capital District, Local 241, will conduct recruitment for eight apprentices from May 2, 2008 through April 4, 2009, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications will be available at the local, 890 Third St., Albany, from 8 a.m. to noon, the first Friday of each month during the recruitment period.

The committee requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have at least a tenth grade education.
  • Have lived within the local's geographic jurisdiction for at least one year prior to the application date -- Albany, Clinton, Columbia, Essex, Fulton, Greene, Hamilton, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Warren or Washington County.
  • Have transportation to various job sites and apprentice classes.
  • Sign a statement declaring they are physically able to do the work.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
