Roofers Recruit Apprentices

HAUPPAUGE, NY (09/17/2007; 1027)(readMedia)-- The United Union of Roofers and Waterproofers Joint Apprenticeship Committee, Local 154, will conduct recruitment through September 3, 2008 for eight apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications will be available at the local, 370 Vanderbilt Motor Parkway, Suite 1, Hauppauge, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday, excluding holidays. Completed applications must be returned by August 31, 2008.

The committee requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school or general equivalency diploma.
  • Have transportation to and from work sites.
  • Take a physical examination, at the sponsor’s expense, prior to starting work.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
