Roofers Recruit Apprentices

OLEAN, NY (09/25/2007; 1140)(readMedia)-- The United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, Local 210, will conduct recruitment from October 1, 2007 through March 28, 2008 for six roofer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications will be available Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the following New York State Department of Labor offices: 19 E. Third St., Jamestown; 200 Lake Shore Drive West, Dunkirk; 175 N. Union St., Suite 4, Olean; and at the Allegany County Employment and Training Complex, 7 Wells Lane, Belmont. They can also be obtained at: Jamestown Roofing Inc., 119 Clifton Ave., Jamestown and A.W. Farrell & Son, 3761 E. Lake Rd., Dunkirk.

The committee requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school or general equivalency diploma – transcript required after acceptance.
  • Have a valid driver’s license -- apprentices will be required to drive company vehicles.
  • Have reliable transportation to and from work sites and instruction facilities.
  • Must be a resident of Chautauqua, Cattaraugus or Allegany counties.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
