CORTLAND, NY (07/08/2008; 0851)(readMedia)-- Nearly 650 alumni and friends are expected to enjoy class get-togethers, parties and other activities on the SUNY Cortland campus during the 2008 Alumni Reunion Weekend from July 18-20.
"We look forward to hosting Nu Sigma Chi sorority this year in celebration of its 80th anniversary at Cortland," said Erin Boylan, assistant director of alumni affairs. "In addition to our reunion classes, we are also excited to bring back together, for the first time, graduates of our Athletic Training Program."
Reunion Weekend opens that Friday afternoon with an 18-hole golf tournament at Walden Oaks Golf Course. Also on Friday afternoon, the SUNY Cortland Alumni Association, the Cortland College Foundation and SUNY Cortland President Erik J. Bitterbaum will host a special reception for the Reunion Class Planning Committee and Reunion Gift Committee members in the Dowd Fine Arts Gallery. The Class of 1958 dinner will be held in the SUNY Cortland Alumni House. Friday's activities culminate with a reunion party in the Corey Union Function Room.
Saturday's events include campus tours and photographs. Participants include the Half Century Club, comprised of everyone who graduated more than 50 years ago, the Classes of 1948, 1953, 1958, 1963, 1968, 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988, 1993 and 1998, members of Nu Sigma Chi sorority and graduates of the Athletic Training Program.
Memorial Library will be open and the College Archives will be available for perusal from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. on Saturday. Guided campus tours will be given by orientation student leaders at 10:30 a.m.
The Alumni Luncheon begins Saturday at noon in the Corey Union Function Room. The event honors reunion classes and this year's Distinguished Alumni Award recipients. The association will present Distinguished Alumni Awards to Ernest E. Southworth '58, a gifted teacher and statewide leader in the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) of the United States of America, and Willard Lewis '66, retired president of Isothermal Community College in North Carolina. The association will bestow its Distinguished Young Alumni Award on John R. Higgitt '98, a law clerk in the New York State Supreme Court Appellate Division, First Judicial Department.
Immediately following the luncheon, members of Alpha Kappa Phi/Agonian, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Sigma Rho Sigma sorority will meet in the Corey Union Fireplace Lounge. Members of Nu Sigma Chi sorority will sponsor an alumnae tea from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at their house on 52 Prospect Terrace. The sorority also plans a dinner at the SUNY Cortland Alumni House.
Alumni tours of the SUNY Cortland Alumni House and Stadium Complex will be given in the afternoon.
An all-class banquet that evening will feature food, music and fun between 6-11 p.m. in Corey Union Function Room.
On Sunday, a farewell breakfast is scheduled for 9-11 a.m. in the Corey Union Caleion Room.
