CORTLAND, NY (02/26/2008; 1145)(readMedia)-- Five SUNY Cortland students have been named SUNY Cortland’s Phi Kappa Phi Scholars of the Year.
The SUNY Cortland chapter of the national honor society recognized the students based on their academic accomplishments and their leadership and volunteer involvement at the College. Each student will receive a $50 check and will be honored at Phi Kappa Phi’s induction ceremony on April 12 at 10 a.m. in the Corey Union Function Room.
Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and largest honor society for all academic disciplines. Each year, about 30,000 members are initiated into the society on nearly 300 campuses in the United States, Puerto Rico and the Philippines.

Kaitlyn Boyes
A senior sport management major from Tonawanda, N.Y., Kaitlyn Boyes received nine awards during the 2007-08 school year for her work in the sport management program, extracurricular activities and community service. Besides being an active participant in campus life at SUNY Cortland, Boyes has maintained a 3.91 grade point average and has made the Dean’s List and the President’s List. Since 2005, she has been an event manager with the SUNY Cortland Athletic Department, where she was one of six students selected to manage and coordinate various SUNY Cortland sporting events.
Following graduation, Boyes aspires to a career in event planning and management for the National Football League. She is the daughter of Jerry and Susan Boyes of 6 Heritage Court, Tonawanda.
Taryn Donovan
A junior sport management and Spanish major from Utica, N.Y., Taryn Donovan received the 2007 Sophomore of the Year award from the SUNY Cortland Sport Management Department. Recognized for being in the top 5 percent of her class since her freshman year in 2005, Donovan has maintained a 3.97 grade point average and has made the Dean’s List and President’s List.
She has volunteered with several organizations at SUNY Cortland, including serving as a student ambassador for the Admissions Office and as the Spanish Club representative for the Student Government Association Senate meetings.
After graduation, she hopes to become a sports agent and deal with athlete contract negotiations. She is the daughter of Patrick and Christine Donovan of 616 Utica Road, Utica.
Michelle Housworth
A senior English, international studies and Spanish triple major from Owego, N.Y., Michelle Housworth has received the renewable SUNY Cortland Merit Scholarship annually since 2005. Recognized for being in the top 5 percent of her class since 2005, she is currently ranked fifth in the class. Housworth has maintained a 4.15 grade point average and made the Dean’s List and the President’s List.
Since 2001, Housworth has been a volunteer and advocate with the Tioga County Youth Court in Owego. She serves as the secretary for the SUNY Cortland Model United Nations and the Political Science Association. She is treasurer for the English Club and executive assistant to the director of the James M. Clark Center for International Education.
After pursuing a joint-degree program at the graduate level in law and international relations, Housworth hopes to enter the field of international law and diplomacy. She is the daughter of Eleanor and Gerald Housworth of 110 Montrose Ave., Owego.
Jason Page
A senior history major from Little York, N.Y., Jason Page received the Academic Achievement Award for the top five students in the School of Arts and Sciences in 2006. He has kept a 4.09 grade point average and made the President’s List.
Since 2006, Page has served as a peer tutor at SUNY Cortland while holding down a full-time job where he recently gained a promotion coordinating the living skills program for the dually diagnosed population at the William George Agency in Freeville, N.Y.
Upon graduation, Page aspires to pursue a master’s degree in social science at Syracuse University. He hopes to find work guiding policy and decision-making with an international organization. Page lives with his wife, Jennifer, at 6054 Route 281, Little York.
Kimberly Swan
A senior speech and hearing science major from Scarsdale, N.Y., Kimberly Swan has maintained a 4.07 grade point average and has made the Dean’s List and President’s List.
Swan has volunteered with several organizations at SUNY Cortland, including the SUNY Cortland Blood Drive and the Relay for Life. She is serving a term as the president of the Speech and Hearing Club.
Swan hopes to pursue a career in speech and hearing after graduation. She is the daughter of Kenneth and Jo-Anne Swan of 1 School Lane, Scarsdale.
