CORTLAND, NY (07/24/2008; 1103)(readMedia)-- Dale Anderson, who served as a lecturer on the SUNY Cortland Recreation, Parks and Leisure Studies faculty since 1998, will retire on Aug. 31. He has been designated lecturer emeritus of recreation and leisure studies.
He joined the College as a full-time visiting assistant professor and has served as a full-time lecturer since 2000.
Anderson has made national, regional, state and local professional presentations. He was a member of the Raquette Lake Outdoor Education Committee, a coordinator for the SUNY Cortland Outdoor Opportunities Program and a core committee member for the SUNY Cortland Community Bikes Project.
Since 2004, Anderson has been a snowboard instructor for Greek Peek Mountain Resort in Virgil, N.Y., where he specializes in working with persons with disabilities.
In 2005, Anderson received a Leadership for Civic Engagement Award for his involvement in the community bike program from the Civic Engagement Student Development Committee at SUNY Cortland.
Born and raised in St. Paul, Minn., Anderson received his bachelor's degree in physical education and biology from Minnesota State University at Mankato and a master's degree in physical education from the University of North Dakota.
From 1975-98, he was an assistant professor in the health, physical education and recreation department at the University of North Dakota.
Anderson is certified by the American Association of Snowboard Instructors, the American Canoe Association, Wilderness Medical Associates and the National Alliance for Youth Sports.
In the community, Anderson serves as a Team Challenge Program facilitator with the Cayuga Nature Center in Ithaca, N.Y., and a cross-country ski instructor for the Cornell Outdoor Education Program.
Anderson resides in Cortland, N.Y., with his wife, Lynn Anderson, chair of the Recreation, Parks and Leisure Studies Department. They have a son, Cory, in his junior year at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., and a daughter, Kelly, who recently entered the banking business and lives in Lincoln, N.H.
Upon retirement he plans to become a recreational pilot, to compete in windsurfing events and to pursue snowboarding.
