SUNY Plattsburgh, Clinton Community College Sign Agreements to Benefit Education Majors

Agreements Provide "Clear Path" for Students Pursuing Bachelor's Degree

PLATTSBURGH, NY (02/19/2008; 0827)(readMedia)-- On Feb. 12, the presidents of two area colleges shook hands after signing agreements that will assist those pursuing bachelor's degrees in childhood education.

The new articulation agreements, signed by SUNY Plattsburgh President Dr. John Ettling and Clinton Community College Interim President Dr. Frederick Woodward, facilitate the process by which Clinton students can pursue a bachelor's degree in childhood education at SUNY Plattsburgh.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for members of our community to begin their educational career at Clinton Community College and smoothly transfer to SUNY Plattsburgh," said Woodward. "This is yet another example of the cooperative relationship our two colleges have developed over many years."

The schools had an existing articulation agreement for students pursuing degrees in education, but the new agreements were struck after a significant overhaul of the education curriculum at SUNY Plattsburgh. This overhaul has resulted in new courses, different requirements, and a philosophical change that gets students out in the field during their first semester in the program.

"The new agreements reaffirm our commitment to work with our friends at Clinton Community College for the benefit of students," said Ettling. "The agreements represent a clear path for students to ensure a seamless transition into our revitalized education program."

The agreements construct a framework by which students from Clinton Community College can fulfill the requirements of an associate degree in childhood education. The agreement is also designed to help students meet the requirements of a specific area of concentration such as English, math, biology, chemistry and social studies. If accepted at SUNY Plattsburgh, the Clinton graduate can then enter as a junior with a clear set of courses and requirements that will add up to a four-year program and a bachelor's degree in childhood education.
