ALBANY, NY (03/14/2008; 1016)(readMedia)-- New York State Office of General Services (OGS) Commissioner John C. Egan today announced that the Empire State Plaza Ice Skating Rink closed for the season on Wednesday, March 12.
A recreational favorite for ice skating in the Capital District, the Empire State Plaza ice rink was recently chosen the top local ice skating venue in a weekly newspaper reader survey. For the 2007-2008 season, the rink was the site of several special events, including the popular Rock N’ Skate program. These family-oriented events featured music and good times for all ages. The season featured a WinterFest celebration with Radio Disney and ended with the Audiostars. In between, Rocky Velvet brought their sounds to the plaza. In December the rink provided a backdrop for the annual celebration of the OGS tree lighting ceremony.
“Once again OGS hosted another successful season at the Plaza ice rink,” Commissioner Egan said. “The rink is extremely popular and we’re pleased that so many families have enjoyed using this tremendous downtown Albany facility.”
OGS estimates that approximately 13,000 people enjoyed free skating at the Empire State Plaza rink this season. Additionally, skate rentals made available through Cahill’s Sports proved successful with more than 800 pairs of skates being rented throughout the season.
The rink is located at the north end of the Empire State Plaza, near the Capitol and The Egg.
