DES MOINES, IA (08/14/2008; 1402)(readMedia)-- The 2008 Iowa State Fair string instrument contests took the stage in Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall on Friday, August 8 and Saturday, August 9.
Paul Roberts and Jon Eric, both of Iowa City, dueled for the title of Iowa State Fair Banjo contest champion. Roberts climbed ahead with his superior playing, claiming first place. Eric was awarded second place.
Jessie Callaway of Fletcher, N.C. took first place in the Guitar contest, defeating seven other contestants including second-place winner Dale Wayman of West Des Moines and third-place winner John Buckingham of Des Moines.
Muscatine resident David Mehaffey won first place in the Mandolin contest. Tim Peter of Prairie City claimed second place and Des Moines' John Buckingham took third.
The contest was part of "Rural Americana Olde Tyme Competitions" in Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall. A first prize of $5 and ribbons were awarded to each class.
The Iowa State Fair runs through August 17 - "U Gotta Love It." The Fairgrounds are located at East 30th and East University Avenue, just 10 minutes east of downtown Des Moines, and are open 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. each day of the Fair. Exhibit hours may vary.
