The Albany Academies To Hold Annual Leukemia/Lymphoma Benefit Race

Annual Strides for a Cure and Kids Fun Run to be held on Sunday, May 4

ALBANY, NY (04/30/2008; 0849)(readMedia)-- The Albany Academies will hold its annual Strides for a Cure and Kids Fun Run in memory of Sol Kahn '06 this Sunday, May 4, with proceeds benefiting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Registration for the race – which will be held at The Albany Academies Track (located at 135 Academy Road in Albany) – begins at 8:30 a.m., with the three-mile walk beginning at 10 a.m. and the Kids Fun Run at 11:30 a.m.

Solomon Jochnowitz-Kahn enrolled at The Albany Academy as an 8th grader, excelling in both Math and Wrestling. Sol possessed more than a willingness to help others; it would be better described as a desire to help others. He helped his friends, family, teachers, and coaches whenever necessary, and also went out of his way to help people he did not know.

Sol's life goal was to become a public servant – a truly selfless role in the community. He was committed to his community and his dream was to work in the field of Law Enforcement. He was accepted to attend the University of Rochester in the fall of 2006. Sol was diagnosed with Leukemia in January 2006, and had a very aggressive type – Philadelphia Chromosome.

With the support of the community, Sol was able to walk the stage at commencement to receive his Academy diploma in May 2006; he passed away in September 2006. The Albany Academies has raised more than $32,000 in Sol’s name since January 2006.

Strides for a Cure is a great example of the Academies community coming together to support the fight against blood cancers while enjoying face painting, ice cream, music, games and more. The event is presented by Trustco Bank and 88.3 The Saint.

The Albany Academies is home to the two campuses of The Albany Academy (West Campus) and Albany Academy for Girls (East Campus), which share a nearly 200-year-old tradition of outstanding single-gender independent school education. Both campuses bring with them deeply treasured values of community, tradition, and purpose to the newly formed school known as The Albany Academies.

The Albany Academies is committed to developing the potential of the whole individual by building a community that fosters scholarship, leadership, character, service and creativity.
