The Plight of the Abused, Protective Mother

Sponsored by South Suffolk NOW

ALBANY, NY (04/14/2008; 1256)(readMedia)-- On Monday, May 5, 2008, at 7:00 PM, at the Islip Public Library, 71 Monell Ave., the South Suffolk Chapter of the National Organization for Women will present “The Plight of the Abused, Protective Mother.”

Panelists include Tina Camacho, Domestic Relations Chairperson, South Suffolk NOW; Lois Schwaeber, Esq., Director of Legal Services, Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence; Kim Lurie, President, Alliance to Restore Integrity in Divorce; Adam Small, Esq., Suffolk County Coalition Against Domestic Violence; and a representative from Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk.

Panel will discuss ways in which mothers with abusive partners or spouses can avoid counter charges of “Alienation of Parental Affection” when they complain about the abuse during the course of separation or divorce proceedings. Legal defenses for mothers who have been threatened with, or have suffered, loss of custody as a result of the ‘alienation’ charge will also be presented, as will recent developments demonstrating that ‘alienation’ charges are often fraudulent.
