United Derrickman and Riggers Recruit Apprentices

LONG ISLAND CITY, NY (03/27/2008; 1106)(readMedia)-- The United Derrickman and Riggers Association, Local 197, will open recruitment from March 31 through April 4, 2008 for 30 iron worker (stone derrickman and rigger) apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications will be available at the local, 25-19 43rd Ave., Long Island City, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to noon, from March 31 through April 8, or until 150 applications have been issued, whichever occurs first.

The union requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school or equivalency diploma.
  • Take an aptitude test.
  • Be interviewed by the local’s Joint Apprenticeship Committee.
  • Pay a $15 non-refundable application fee.
  • Sign an affidavit stating they are physically able to do the work.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
