United Service Workers Recruit Apprentices

BOHEMIA, NY (07/22/2008; 1100)(readMedia)-- The HVAC Division of United Service Workers, Joint Apprenticeship Committee of Bohemia, Local 355, will conduct apprentice recruitment from July 22 through 31 for two sheet metal workers and two pipefitter apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications will be available at the local, 267 Knickerbocker Ave., Bohemia, from 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday of each week during the recruitment period.

The committee requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school or equivalency diploma.
  • Have reliable transportation to work sites and related instruction classes.
  • Sign an affidavit stating they are physically able to do the work.
  • Take a physical examination and pass a substance abuse test at the committee's expense -- if accepted for the program.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
