World Music Duo Brazz Tree to Perform on Oct. 11 at College

CORTLAND, NY (10/01/2008; 0932)(readMedia)-- The New York City-based violin and guitar duo, Brazz Tree, will present their new brand of music called New World acoustic rock (Music NWAR) on Saturday, Oct. 11, at SUNY Cortland.

Presented by the Campus Artist and Lecture Series (CALS), Brazz Tree will perform at 8 p.m. in the Corey Union Exhibition Lounge. Tickets are $3 for SUNY Cortland students and $5 for all others and may be obtained through the Campus Activities and Corey Union Office, Corey Union, Room 406, or at the door one hour prior to the performance.

Music NWAR draws on traditional forms from places such as Ireland and India, while remaining rooted in the ethos of the new world. Guitarist Brad Hammonds' folk-inspired, percussive riff-based guitar lines are coupled with traditional folk and fiddle tunes. Mazz Swift's lyrics are sung with soulful originality.

"A sublime, surprising, bristling and hearty stew of Irish lyricism, daredevil jazz aerobatics and punk rock moxie," wrote Greg Tate of the Village Voice. "Both the elegance and the energy are off the chain."

Brazz Tree's second and most recent album, "Spiral On," is the fusion of folk, classical and jazz elements combined with a mixture of pop and rock.

Hammonds and Swift released their debut album, "Quest," in October 2004 and began touring in early 2006.

They were selected to perform at the 2006 South By Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas, the 2006 National Association for Campus Activities National Convention in Boston, Mass., and the 2005 North By Northeast Festival in Toronto, Canada. Brazz Tree has received radio play from across the country, including a spotlight on National Public Radio and Acoustic Café (ACAFE) as "one to watch."

CALS is funded by the mandatory activity fee, Auxiliary Services Corporation (ASC), The Cortland Fund and the Cortland College Foundation.
