MASTIC, NY (04/21/2008; 1209)(readMedia)-- The endorsed Republican candidate for Long Island's First Congressional District today lauded a bipartisan initiative that would enable taxpayers to direct funds to programs supporting homeless veterans.
Running a campaign championing America's armed forces, Army veteran Lee Zeldin announced his support for a law proposed by Long Island's Republican Congressman Peter King and Democrat Congressman Steve Israel that would create a box on tax returns that if checked, would enable Americans to designate $3 of their income tax payment to assist homeless veterans.
"My fellow military veterans should never be homeless," said Zeldin. "We must support our troops in combat with ammunition, supplies and equipment, and we must support our veterans at home with shelter."
The funds raised by the proposed bill would provide services and assistance to homeless veterans.
"Our troops who fight so valiantly to protect our freedoms deserve our appreciation," said Zeldin. "We must not ever forget the sacrifices of these heroes, and give them every opportunity to succeed after they wear the uniform."
Zeldin served as an aide to State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle. The Shirley resident studied at the University at Albany, graduated from Albany Law School, and earned his commission through Army ROTC. He was a paratrooper, prosecutor and magistrate with the 82nd Airborne Division and XVIII Airborne Corps. In the summer of 2006, he was a JAG attorney deployed to Iraq. He is currently an attorney at Raiser & Kenniff on Long Island.
