UDALLAS RELEASE: University of Dallas Creates Cyber Scholarship for Women

Gupta College of Business Announces George S. Sturgeon Cybersecurity Scholarship Fund for Women

IRVING, TX (08/09/2018) Beginning this fall semester, second-year Master of Science in Cybersecurity and MBA students with a cyber concentration enrolled in the University of Dallas' Satish & Yasmin Gupta College of Business can apply for the George S. Sturgeon Cybersecurity Scholarship Fund for Women. The scholarship strengthens the university's reputation as a leader in cybersecurity education. Since 2003, the University of Dallas cybersecurity program has been designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The university's cybersecurity program was also recently ranked among the "Best Online Master of Cybersecurity Degree Programs" including No. 1 in Texas by Master's Programs Guide.

This scholarship, provided by Ellen M. Sturgeon, includes matching funds from Fidelity Investments and was created in honor of the late cybersecurity professional George S. Sturgeon.

Sturgeon dedicated 30 years of his career to information assurance as a diplomat for the U.S. Department of State. His work took him to American embassies worldwide as he collaborated with his colleagues domestically and internationally to secure classified data. In a predominantly male industry, Sturgeon's family is proud to inspire and encourage women to take on this gratifying career choice in honor of Sturgeon's legacy and memory.

"My father would be honored to have his name attached to a scholarship that promotes the advancement of women in cybersecurity through the University of Dallas' outstanding program," said Ellen M. Sturgeon. "This is an exciting time to be a part of this industry, and I couldn't ask for a stronger partnership than with the university's cyber faculty. I am proud to turn this into an annual scholarship and look forward to many years of making an impact for women in this program."

"I would like to thank Ellen for realizing the importance of her master's degree in cybersecurity," said Sandra Blanke, Ph.D., director of the University of Dallas Center for Cybersecurity Education. "By making this scholarship available to other women in the university's cybersecurity program, Ellen and Fidelity Investments are making an important contribution to increasing the educational opportunities for women in cybersecurity."

In order to be eligible for this scholarship, Master of Science in Cybersecurity and MBA with a concentration in cybersecurity students must be in good academic standing with an overall GPA of at least 3.5, be a full- or part-time female student, and have submitted all required application documents.

Eligible students can apply for the George S. Sturgeon Cybersecurity Scholarship on the University of Dallas website.
