AURORA, IL (09/02/2011)(readMedia)-- Naperville resident Mary Tarling, Aurora University Assistant Professor of Accounting, was among the speakers at the annual meeting of the American Accounting Association in Denver, Colo., on Aug. 8.
Tarling, who is also the Director of Servant Leadership at AU, presented "Teaching Foundational Accounting Concepts for Visual and Kinesthetic Learners Utilizing a Jenga Game." Tarling uses colored Jenga pieces in her classroom to visually recreate patterns relied on by accountants, and as a kinesthetic exercise to clarify core concepts. Her use of the game is a finalist for the Bea Sanders/AICPA Teaching Innovation Award.
Prior to joining AU in 2004, Tarling had been teaching since 1999. Earlier in her career, she was active in the real-estate development, health care and telecommunications industries, including a period of time with ServiceMaster Company, culminating in the CFO position she now occupies for a small telecommunications consulting firm.
She holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from Northern Illinois University and an MBA from Benedictine University.
