Acura's New and Redesigned Compact Models Drive July Sales
2013 RDX and ILX Proving Popular with U.S. Buyers
PEABODY, MASS. (08/10/2012)(readMedia)-- Acura's sales were up 36 percent year-over-year in July, a number achieved with significant contributions from the automaker's redesigned 2013 RDX and all-new 2013 ILX. While the Acura MDX crossover SUV continues to be the lineup's bestseller, moving 4,288 units in the United States last month, the ILX compact sedan and RDX compact crossover showed that they are quickly gaining momentum with buyers.
Boosted by a 2013-model-year redesign that upgraded power, fuel economy and interior quality, the RDX had a record month in July, more than doubling its tally from a year ago with 2,664 units sold. Acura's new gateway model, the 2013 ILX, was popular as well during its second full month of sales, moving 1,410 vehicles.
"More and more of today's buyers want smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles that don't sacrifice comfort and technology, and the 2013 RDX and ILX are perfect examples," said Joel Avery, general manager of Acura of Peabody, an Acura dealer in Massachusetts. "The RDX now comes standard with a Pandora internet radio interface, Active Noise Control and a rear view camera, while the ILX gives compact buyers a new, more affordable way to enjoy a variety of premium features."
The 2013 Acura ILX offers plenty of convenient technologies, including standard iPod integration, Bluetooth connectivity and push-button ignition. For those with an itchy phone hand, an SMS text-message function can read incoming texts aloud and send six pre-prepared responses. Drivers can also upgrade to optional heated leather front seats, Active Sound Cancellation and XM satellite radio for a more luxurious cabin experience.
Available with three different engines, the ILX allows buyers to choose their ideal mix of performance and efficiency, including Acura's first-ever hybrid drivetrain. Returning 38 mpg on the highway, the Acura ILX Hybrid combines a 1.5-liter engine, an Integrated Motor Assist electric motor and a lithium-ion battery to achieve its superior efficiency. Meanwhile, standard ILX models come with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that outputs 150 horsepower while returning a healthy 35 mpg on the highway. Drivers that want some extra acceleration will likely instead opt for a 2.4-liter four-cylinder powerplant that produces 201 horsepower.
While the ILX and RDX are currently reaping the benefits of their fresh features on the sales floor, the popular Acura MDX is expected to get its own redesign near the end of 2013. Automobile magazine recently spied an early prototype of the next-generation MDX during testing in Europe, noting that at least the exterior design will take cues from the smaller 2013 RDX. Further changes, like a revised 3.5-liter V6 engine with direct injection, are rumored but currently unconfirmed.
"We expect the upcoming MDX to maintain its position as a top luxury choice for Massachusetts families by taking performance and comfort to new levels," noted Avery. "While many of the details are still under wraps, it's a safe bet that the new MDX will not only remain Acura's bestseller, but also will expand its appeal among luxury sport-utility shoppers."
