Advisory/Virginia Tech

ALBANY, NY (04/20/2007)(readMedia)-- The New York State Office of Mental Health extends deepest sympathy to those individuals, families and communities affected by the recent violence at Virginia Tech. An event such as the recent violence at Virginia Tech affects our entire nation, but it is likely that those with personal ties to the incident will be more deeply affected.

The New York State Office of Mental Health website (www.omh.state.ny.us) contains a number of links to sources of additional information and support designed to help children, adolescents and adults understand and cope with such an event and its aftereffects. There is information for students who have been directly affected; for parents, friends, families and communities of students directly affected; and for parents and children of all ages.

Following an event like this, many people will find it difficult to stop thinking about what happened. Many will feel fearful or anxious. These are normal reactions to an abnormal, terrible event and for most people, these feelings will gradually decrease over time. However, if the feelings become overwhelming or the impact of these events is interfering with day-to-day life, the help of a mental health professional is advised. Effective treatment is available.
