Advocates To Celebrate Governor Hochul for Lowering Energy Bills w/100-Foot Rule Repeal!

ALBANY, NY (12/21/2025) (readMedia)-- TOMORROW, lawmakers and advocates will hold a virtual press conference to celebrate Governor Hochul's decision to sign A8888/S8417, legislation that ends the costly "100-foot rule" and stops utilities from charging New Yorkers over $600 million on their energy bills every year. The decision follows years of advocacy to end the mandate that requires utilities to charge New Yorkers more to expand the polluting gas system that's already too expensive. By signing this bill, New York joins California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland and Massachusetts as the sixth state to repeal outdated gas mandates that cost ratepayers more money.

Already, 1 in 4 New Yorkers are struggling to afford their energy bills. The 100-foot rule is making this crisis worse by allowing utilities to charge New Yorkers more on their energy bills while they bring in record profits on our backs. By repealing the 100-foot rule, Governor Hochul is now delivering on her promise to save families money and hold utilities accountable for taking advantage of this outdated loophole in our laws.

The press conference follows a series of press conferences across the state in recent weeks, where advocates in Westchester, Kingston, Rochester, Brooklyn, Queens and Albany urged the Governor to sign the legislation before the end of this year.
