PORTALES, NM (04/12/2018) Zachery "Zac" Newberry, a sophomore studying agricultural business at Eastern New Mexico University, has planned on attending ENMU since childhood. "I can remember when I was a third grader just knowing I would someday be a Greyhound," he said.
"I chose to attend ENMU because of the quality education that is provided with a very low cost when comparing to other universities. I am honored to have the opportunity to attain my degree so close to home," explained Zac, who was born in Clovis, New Mexico, and raised in Portales, New Mexico. His father works as a combination technician at Yucca Telecom, and his mother works at the Roosevelt General Hospital Clinic. His younger sister is in high school.
Zac has always wanted to pursue a career in agriculture. "The agricultural business major at ENMU allows me to attain a degree in business with a core foundation centering on farm and agricultural management."
The ENMU student works in nearly full-time position in upper management on a local farm. After graduating in spring 2020, Zac would like to pursue a career at the farm and possibly become part owner later on. "I hope to help grow the business and improve the business while also helping my community to the best of my ability," he said of his career goals.
His favorite course at ENMU so far was Math 119. Zac took the class in fall 2017 and enjoyed the way the materials were presented and the progression of the class. He is looking forward to diving into his major after finishing his general education requirements.
Zac, who has been on the Dean's List for all three of the semesters he has attended ENMU, offers this advice to students interested in his field of study:
"Students who are interested in agricultural business, or even just business for that matter, need to make sure that it would be something they would enjoy doing, and that goes for every other field of study, as well.
"Don't get out of college and get a career where you are just living for the weekend; make sure it's something you're going to enjoy getting up every morning to do. Make sure it's something you're going to be proud of doing and accomplishing.
"The pride and sense of self-worth and accomplishment make all the difference in the world."
