MILLERSVILLE, PA (06/03/2014)(readMedia)-- Alex Otthofer, East Petersburg, Pa., has been selected to receive the Roy Lutz Winters Foreign Language Scholarship. Otthofer will graduate from Hempfield High School and will attend Millersville University of Pennsylvania this fall to study towards his Bachelor of Science in Education in Spanish.
The Roy Lutz Winters Foreign Language Scholarship is an award for an incoming freshman with an outstanding high school record who elects to major in foreign language or chooses foreign language as part of a double major. The scholarship is for $646.
Otthofer pursued a solid college preparatory curriculum which included honors-level, advanced and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Honors level classes included English, American cultures, American history II, world history, general science, biology, chemistry and Spanish IV as well as Spanish Life and Adventures in Latin America. He studied advanced geometry and AP-level Breadth and Concentration portfolio, which was due to his interest and ability in the visual arts.
In addition to his academics, Otthofer participated in the school orchestra in grades nine and 10 and in the Lancaster County Youth Symphony Orchestra through 11th grade. He was a member of the National Art Honors Society in grades 10 through 12, elected as the club treasurer, and a member of the Society for Academic Excellence in Foreign Language in grades 11 and 12. He participated actively in his Church Youth Group and volunteered as a tutor for English as a second language students.
