Alex Price Honored at Hampden-Sydney College Graduation

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (05/14/2013)(readMedia)-- On May 12, at commencement ceremonies marking the end of the 238th academic year at Hampden-Sydney College, Alex Tyler Price, Class of 2013 (right), received the Gammon Cup, presented by Dr. Dennis G. Stevens, Dean of the Faculty at Hampden-Sydney College. The Gammon Cup, given in memory of Dr. Edgar G. Gammon, a Hampden-Sydney graduate of the Class of 1905, pastor of College Church from 1917 to 1923, and President of the College from 1939 to1955, is awarded to the member of the graduating class who has best served the College through character, scholarship, and athletic ability.

A Venable Scholar, Price served as President of the Tiger Athletic Club, as Vice-President of the honor society Chi Beta Phi (sciences), and as Vice President of the Society of Physics Students. He played linebacker on the varsity football team, was named to the All-ODAC Academic Team, was a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Award (top scholar athlete in college football), and was recently awarded a NCAA 2012-13 fall sports postgraduate scholarship.

Price received awards as the top student in his class in mathematics in his sophomore, junior, and senior years. At Final Convocation in April, he received both the Weyland Thomas Joyner Physics Award and the William C. Chewning, Jr. Mathematics Award. He is a member of the honor societies Phi Beta Kappa (academics), Omicron Delta Kappa (leadership), and Pi Mu Epsilon (mathematics). Graduating summa cum laude with a B.S. in physics and applied mathematics major, Price is the son of Tammi & Jay Price of Fairfax. He has been accepted into the graduate program for medical physics at Duke University.

A private college for men, Hampden-Sydney is ranked in the top tier of liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report. The College is known for its liberal arts curriculum, the Honor Code which stresses individual and collective responsibility, and a focus on the education of young men.
