HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (05/10/2013)(readMedia)-- At Final Convocation on April 25, Hampden-Sydney College senior Alex Tyler Price received both the Weyland Thomas Joyner Physics Award, presented by Dr. Walter C. McDermott III, Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy, and the William C. Chewning, Jr. Award, presented by Dr. David S. Pelland, Associate Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science.
The Weyland Thomas Joyner Physics Award is given to the physics major who exhibits outstanding scholastic achievement in the field. The William C. Chewning Mathematics Award was established by the family of William Carrol Chewning, Jr. '67 and recognizes the most outstanding senior mathematics major.
A Venable Scholar, Alex served as President of the Tiger Athletic Club, as Vice-President of the honor society Chi Beta Phi (sciences), and as Vice President of the Society of Physics Students. Alex played linebacker on the varsity football team, was named to the All-ODAC Academic Team, was a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Award (top scholar athlete in college football), and was recently awarded a NCAA 2012-13 fall sports postgraduate scholarship. He received awards for the top student in his class in mathematics in his sophomore, junior, and senior years. He is a member of the honor societies Phi Beta Kappa (academics), Omicron Delta Kappa (leadership) and Pi Mu Epsilon (mathematics). A physics and applied mathematics major, Alex graduated from Fairfax High School and is the son of Tammi & Jay Price of Fairfax.
