SPRINGFIELD, MA (11/28/2011)(readMedia)-- Alexandra Lyman of Easthampton was recently named a recipient of the Skookum Award, an honor presented by Western New England University's Alumni Association. The Skookum is awarded to students who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in all their endeavors: academics, co-curricular activities, sports, and community service. "Skookum" is a Native American Chinook Indian word meaning "excellence." Lyman was one of 15 outstanding seniors to receive the award during the University's Homecoming Weekend.

A Communication major, Lyman is a member of the Mortar Board honor society and the Lambda Pi Eta honor society, where she serves as secretary. She also took part in the Alternative Spring Break program, traveling to Talledega National Forest in Alabama to clear and widen trails to make them handicapped accessible. In addition to serving as a resident assistant, Lyman interned with ABC40/Fox 6 and Environmental Compliance Services. She also serves as promotions manager and news anchor for Golden Bear Television on campus.
