SAINT PAUL, MN (12/20/2012)(readMedia)-- Bethel University senior Val Smith from Alexandria was chosen as the MIAC Volleyball Defensive Player of the Year when the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced the 2012 Volleyball Awards on Dec. 5.
Smith finished the season with a MIAC-best total of 720 overall digs and posted the second-highest overall digs per set average of 6.05. The senior finished conference play with 5.64 digs per set, which tops all MIAC opponents, and 237 conference digs, tying for first in the conference. She is now ranked tenth nationally in digs per set.
