All-New 2014 Mazda3 Will Lose Pounds, Gain Aggressive Styling

Redesigned Compact to Fully Embrace Mazda's SKYACTIV Technology and KODO Design

WAUKEGAN, ILL. (10/02/2012)(readMedia)-- A year ago, the 2012 Mazda3 went on sale with a new SKYACTIV drivetrain that allows it to return 40 mpg on the highway, and now the popular compact car is due to receive Mazda's full suite of fuel-efficient SKYACTIV technologies for the 2014 model year.

According to Car and Driver magazine, the redesigned 2014 Mazda3 will move to the same lightweight SKYACTIV platform as the new 2013 Mazda CX-5 compact crossover, shedding hundreds of pounds in the process. While that change could lead to even better fuel efficiency, the new Mazda3 will look nothing like an econobox, incorporating the automaker's aggressive KODO design theme to match the front styling of the upcoming all-new 2014 Mazda6 and refreshed 2013 Mazda CX-9.

"Mazda has said that it plans to cut at least 220 pounds every time it redesigns one of its new models, so we can expect the new Mazda3 to drop at least that much," said Tom McGovern, general manager of Rosen Mazda Waukegan, a Chicagoland Mazda dealer. "Despite that weight loss, fans can expect the next generation to retain the fun driving dynamics that have helped make the Mazda3 the brand's best-selling vehicle."

Car and Driver has also reported that the performance-focused Mazdaspeed3 hatchback could return for the 2014 model year, a thought that will please many driving enthusiasts, while the new Mazda3 could get a diesel engine as well to offer an appealing mix of fuel economy and torque. Though Mazda has yet to set an official date, buyers can expect the 2014 Mazda3 to go on sale either in late 2013 or early 2014.

The bolder design lines set to grace the 2014 Mazda3 can be seen prominently on the front fascia of the updated 2013 Mazda CX-9, which will make its global debut later this month in Australia. Featuring KODO-inspired changes, like Mazda's new signature five-point winged grille and slanted headlights, the 2013 CX-9 crossover will bring a fresh look to its current generation when it goes on sale in the late fall.

Inside, the 2013 Mazda CX-9 will receive tweaks to its interior design, as well as an updated infotainment system that can be controlled by voice using Mazda's Human Machine Interface. Meanwhile, drivers can be warned of potential dangers with new available active safety technologies, including a Forward Obstruction Warning System, Lane Departure Warning System and High Beam Control System.

"Mazda's new KODO designs are giving its vehicles the modern looks they need to stand out in their highly competitive segments, and the 2013 CX-9 is no different," added McGovern. "Even with the edgier exterior styling, the crossover's interior will be more accommodating than ever with the new convenient tech features."
