SPRINGFIELD, MA (11/28/2011)(readMedia)-- Amanda DeCosta of Dartmouth was recently named a recipient of the Skookum Award, an honor presented by Western New England University's Alumni Association. The Skookum is awarded to students who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in all their endeavors: academics, co-curricular activities, sports, and community service. "Skookum" is the Native American Chinook Indian word meaning "excellence." DeCosta was one of 15 outstanding seniors to receive the award during the University's Homecoming Weekend.
A Political Science major, DeCosta has held numerous leadership positions within the Residence Hall Association, serving as Vice President of her Hall Council, Programming Co-Chairperson, and Recognition Chairperson. She was a Resident Advisor and has served as President of the Western New England University Chapter of the National Residence Hall Honorary. Off campus, DeCosta serves as a mentor at Duggan Elementary School and a volunteer at both the Gray House and Children's Study Home in Springfield.
