WATERVILLE, ME (10/15/2010)(readMedia)-- Amelia S. Kennedy-Smith of Newtonville enrolled at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, this fall. Before classes began she took part in an orientation that included an introduction to Colby's rigorous academics, rich cultural life, and community involvement opportunities as well as a three-day outdoor excursion. A graduate of St. Marks School, Kennedy-Smith is the daughter of Jean Smith of Newtonville, Mass.
Colby's Class of 2014-the most diverse in the College's history-was selected from a pool nearly 10 times its ultimate size of 486. The students are residents of 33 states and represent 30 different countries, from Canada and China to the Democratic Republic of Congo, and, in a first for Colby, Cameroon. Twelve percent of the Class of 2014 has an international background and more than 24 percent identify with an African-American, Latin-American, Asian-American, or Native American heritage.
Founded in 1813, Colby College is the 12th-oldest independent liberal arts college in the nation.
