POTSDAM, NY (01/27/2011)(readMedia)-- Dr. Karen M. Johnson-Weiner, chairwoman of the Department of Anthropology at SUNY Potsdam, will speak at the next installment of the 2010-11 Women's and Gender Studies Anne R. Malone Lecture Series.

Her talk, entitled "Amish Women in Business," will be offered at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 15 in the eighth floor lounge at Raymond Hall on the SUNY Potsdam campus.

Amish women play a key role in maintaining the economic and social health of family and community. In this talk, the anthropologist will draw on qualitative research, including interviews of Amish women entrepreneurs and participant observation, to explore the relationship between Amish women's entrepreneurial activity and their culturally- and religiously-defined role as homemaker and nurturer.

Johnson-Weiner is the author of "New York Amish: Life in the Plain Communities of the Empire State," published by Cornell University Press, as well as "Train Up a Child: Old Order Amish and Mennonite Schools."

This event is free, and the public is welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served.

The Women's and Gender Studies Lecture Series is sponsored by a grant from the Associated Colleges of the St. Lawrence Valley and is given in memory of Dr. Anne R. Malone.

Upcoming talks will focus on love and identity in the age of Obama and community service learning.
