'Amish in Focus' subject of E-town lecture

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (02/18/2015)(readMedia)-- Professional photographer Dennis Hughes of East Petersburg, Pa., has been taking pictures of the Amish and other Plain groups since 1986. Though they shy away from the taking of photography based on religious beliefs, Hughes' photographs, are respectful of their culture.

His 18,000 wide-ranging images were taken in Pennsylvania and other states and illustrate his sensitivity.

Hughes brings his photography to Elizabethtown College Thursday, March 12, in a presentation titled "Amish in Focus: Photos and Stories." The free talk takes place at 7:30 p.m. in the College's Bucher Meetinghouse in the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies. Hughes will show some of his photos and tell behind-the-scene stories about them.

A reception honoring the photographer for the generous contribution of his slides to Elizabethtown College's Hess Archives and Special Collections follows the program.

Senior Fellow Donald Kraybill traces the Young Center's birth, growth and contributions to the world of Anabaptist and Pietist studies. He also reflects on his 44-year journey at Elizabethtown College. Cost of the Durnbaugh Lecture is free.

Durnbaugh Seminar -- "How a Maverick Amish Group Impacted Federal Hate Crimes"

Seminar presentations explore the motivation behind the Amish beard-cutting attacks in Ohio in the fall of 2011 and the subsequent prosecution and trial. Presenters show how the legal proceedings following the trial have impacted federal prosecution of all hate crimes motivated by religion, race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and country of origin. An informal format will allow ample opportunity for discussion.
