Andrew Schoen of Placitas, NM awarded prestigious Udall Scholarship
ITHACA, NY (04/20/2011)(readMedia)-- Andrew Schoen, a Placitas, N.M. native and Cornell University junior, is one of 80 students to be awarded a 2011 Morris K. Udall Scholarship – a prestigious undergraduate award for students committed to careers in the fields of environmental policy, heath care, and tribal public policy.
Majoring in Economics and minoring in Science of Earth Systems in Cornell's College of Arts and Sciences, Schoen manages a sustainable investment competition with the Cornell Sustainable Enterprise Association and is managing director of the Cornell Venture Capital Club. Before transferring to Cornell, Schoen conducted research at University of California, Santa Barbara, on toxic emissions in Canada and worked on UCSB's Environment Affairs Board. After graduation he plans to develop a venture capital firm that supports environmentally sound businesses.
This year's Udall Scholars were selected from 510 candidates nominated by 231 colleges and universities. Each scholarship provides up to $5,000 for the scholar's junior or senior year.
"This impressive Scholars class represents the best and brightest; they are the future environmental and tribal leaders in this country. The Udall Foundation is thrilled to help them advance their education," said Terrence L. Bracy, chair of the Board of Trustees of the Udall Foundation.
The 2011 Udall Scholars will assemble August 3-7, 2011, in Tucson, Arizona, to receive their awards and meet policymakers and community leaders in environmental fields, tribal health care, and governance.
