Funky fashion creations from NYC, N.J., Conn. high schoolers earn top honors in national competition

ITHACA, NY (04/12/2012)(readMedia)-- Students from Paramus, N.J., New York City, N.Y. and Washington, Conn. are headed to Cornell University as special guests at the Cornell Fashion Collective's 28th Annual Fashion Show – one of the largest student-run fashion shows in the country – after earning top honors in Cornell's national Fashion Design Award competition.

Sketches from each of the three students were selected among 150 entries submitted to judges from Cornell's Department of Fiber Science and Apparel Design, which issued a nationwide call for students to design an outfit under the theme "Our Dichotomous World."

The first place entry from Alyssa Kim features a dress constructed entirely of electrical cables, with portions of the garment revealing copper threads and insulation. The sketch is being fabricated into a real dress, which will be modeled before thousands of spectators during this year's Cornell Fashion Collective show.
