Arboretum’s Breglia to be Honored at November 2 Capital Area Fete

ESPERANCE, NY (10/31/2007)(readMedia)-- For the third time this year, a Capital Region entity will recognize the outstanding accomplishments of Fred Breglia, Director of Horticulture and Operations at the Landis Arboretum. Most recent recognition comes from The State University of New York as it marks the 40th anniversary of its Educational Opportunity Program.

As part of a series of events to celebrate this milestone, EOP selected ISA Certified Arborist Breglia as one of 40 Educational Opportunity Program graduates representative of the tens of thousands who have passed through the program in its four decade history. He will be featured in a publication to celebrate this event and honored at a celebratory, optional black-tie dinner on Friday, November 2 at the Marriot Hotel, 189 Wolf Rd, Albany. Reception 6:30 PM, Dinner, 7:30 PM.

The EOP commendation follows on the heels of a September 29 celebration to honor Mr. Breglia’s as SUNY Cobleskill’s 2007 Outstanding Alumnus and as one of the Capital Region’s 40 Under Forty young entrepreneurs by the Business Review last May.

A seemingly undaunted Breglia received word of this honor during a break from working with a group of disadvantaged individuals who volunteer each week at the Arboretum for an opportunity to learn from Mr. Breglia.

For his perspective, Fred says that “the EOP opportunity not only helped me afford to continue my education, but it opened many doors to my future. I can’t imagine what my life would be today without the support offered by this important educational initiative. The experience makes me understand the need and value of giving back by supporting others determined to succeed as much as I wanted to.”

Speaking on behalf of the Arboretum Trustees, Board President Barbara Brabetz, who also chairs the Natural Sciences Department at SUNY Cobleskill says, The Landis community is proud of Fred and his accomplishments. To us – and others – he exemplifies the goals of the EOP: giving support to someone pursuing a college degree in the anticipation that he or she will enhance the breadth and quality of the work New York State’s workforce. Fred contributions go further because he returns so much of his time and expertise to the community. He was once a student, now he is a valued teacher on behalf of the Arboretum. There is much in his history of determination and accomplishment that serves as an example to all of us.”

Educational Opportunity Program

The Office of Opportunity Programs & Diversity at SUNY administers programs that provide educational access for economically and academically disadvantaged New York State residents. SUNY’s undergraduate Educational Opportunity Program is one of several programs that provide a mechanism for disadvantaged students to gain college entry. The University’s commitment also extends beyond the undergraduate level, as evidenced by programs designed to support the attainment of graduate degrees among Educational Opportunity Program students.

Since 1967, the Educational Opportunity Program has served as the primary access vehicle for disadvantaged New York State residents who wish to attend the State University. More than 47,000 EOP students such as ultimately over-achievers like Mr. Breglia, number have completed advanced degree programs.

To be considered for program admission students must have earned a high school diploma or its equivalent; meet the New York State residency requirement; be academically and/or economically disadvantaged according to program guidelines; and demonstrate the potential to master college-level work with appropriate support.

Because income eligibility guidelines change annually, students should consult with their high school counselors or visit the SUNY Web site at www.suny.edu/student for current income guidelines. Academic eligibility is determined by the campus and is usually based on the applicant’s GPA and test scores as compared to admissions standards.
